Body Mass Index (BMI)
The problem of obesity has been on a rise since the last few years. The size of people’s waists has drastically changed. People used to be much more fit and active before than they are today. It is not only about the waist size but overall body weight has increased over the past few decades and the proportionate or say the ideal body weight when taken in consideration with the height of a person has changed to a large extent. The ideal body weight according a person’s height is calculated with the help of a formula known as the Body Mass Index (BMI). Let’s find out some details about BMI, its calculation and its interpretation.
The Body Mass Index (BMI) is a measurement that allows you to determine the ratio or the balance of your height and your weight. BMI is a ratio that determines whether or not your height is proportionate to your weight according to your age. The measurement of BMI is done in the units of Kgs/m2. It is calculated by dividing a person’s body weight by the square of his/her height. The normal formulae for calculating BMI of a person is:
BMI = Mass (Kgs)/ (Height (m))2
It is the calculation of the body mass index that tells you if you are overweight, obese, slim or average in terms of weight and height proportion. The Body Mass Index is actually a tool that is used to determine the seriousness of your weight issue/obesity. The BMI Chart lists out the interpretations of the results of BMI calculations and looking at them, you can know the nature of your body whether you are having an ideal weight, if you are obese or overweight or slim/underweight. Here is the table that contains the interpretations of the BMI calculations:
BMI Verdict
Less than or equal to 18.5 Underweight
18.5-24.9 Healthy
25-27 Overweight
28-30 Obese
30+ Morbidly obese
The interpretation of this chart is that you are completely safe if you are under the Healthy range, that means that if your BMI is between 18.5-24.9. If you are less than that, you are underweight and so you need to put on some weight so as to be in the ideal weight range. You might face problems like anorexia if you continue to be overweight. You enter the danger mark when your BMI equals or surpasses the 25 point mark. The people whose BMI exceeds 25 start experiencing health problems such as blood pressure, cholesterol, heart problems and diabetes. The people whose BMI is between 28-30 are called obese people and the condition of obesity is known to be very dangerous and very serious if your BMI reaches the 30 point mark.
Obesity treatments can be taken by those who have a BMI which is equal to or more than 25. If you are in the overweight category, you need to be extra careful and reduce weight right away so that you can prevent serious health problems before they occur. Treating obesity is possible and easy with the help of natural slimming pills or other weight loss resources.
