Experts believe that parents can play a serious role in preventing obesity in children. Practice what you preach – If you want your kids to watch less TV and do lot more physical activity then you need to first look at your own lifestyle. Kids grow up emulating their parents. So if you yourself are spending too much time watching TV and leading a sedentary life then you first need to change your own lifestyle. This will encourage your kids too to adopt healthier habits.

Cook healthy meals at home – There is a growing trend to consume packed food besides, research shows that these days families are eating out more at restaurants. Outside food may be tastier but it also richer in calories. Health experts urge parents to encourage their children to eat home-cooked food. If your child loves pizzas and burgers, prepare them at home using low-calorie ingredients. This will help your children value home–cooked food and reduce weight in the process.

Encourage physical activity – These days, children are hooked to TV and video games, it is a daunting task to encourage them for physical activity. Schools should increase the time for physical activity. Parents should also take time out to play with the kids. While having family get-together ensure some time is spend in sports.

Don’t criticize or compare – If your child is over-weight, you should never take a negative approach towards your child. If you keep comparing your child with his friends or siblings who are slim, this might make your child feel inferior and depressed. He may also take a rebellious attitude and start eating more. Experts therefore advise parents to keep patience and be gentle when treating overweight children.
